  • For adrenaline junkies, rafting the “Wild Mile” just north of Bigfork is a must.

  • Enjoy miles of shimmering shoreline and lush forest as you take in the scenic drive along Highway 83.

What can I do on the Swan River?

Rafting

Originating southeast of Kalispell, the Swan River’s mostly mild current winds on for 93 miles through thick forest, intersecting 15 lakes. You can drop your raft at the river’s origin at Grey Wolf Lake and enjoy a mellow float.

If you put in at Swan Lake near Porcupine Creek Bridge, rafters will pass through the awesome scenery of the Swan River National Wildlife Refuge. Here river currents stay gentle for 13 miles until you approach the notorious “Wild Mile” before Bigfork.

Fishing

One of the best stretches of river fishing lies just south of Bigfork. From Highway 83 turn on FSR #888 and head to Salmon Prairie, then onto the Pt. Pleasant put in. Known for its log jams and excellent fishing, this portion of the Swan River is difficult paddling, but great for catching westslope cutthroat and rainbow trout. The river is heavily forested, so shore casting is not advised.

Scenic Drive

Enjoy two of the Flathead’s most spectacular lakes by taking Highway 83 north from the Swan Lake recreation area to Echo Lake. Along the way Swan Lake’s shimmering shores will be on your left and the vast Bob Marshall Wilderness area on the right. Stop to admire the wildflower in bloom and the many whitetail deer that feed roadside. The beautiful resort town of Bigfork is only five miles south west of Echo Lake.

Where is Swan River?

Swan River is easily accessible at the southern end of Swan Lake. For the intrepid paddlers looking for the source, head to Gray Wolf Lake at the bottom of the Mission Mountain Range. Follow U.S. Hwy 93 until reaching Saint Ignatius, then take the main turnoff and follow the signs for Twin Lakes Recreation Area and Gray Wolf Lake.

When is the Swan River open?
